DALAGUETE - THE LAND BEFORE TIMEFriday, February 14, 2020
A trip made to unfold the hidden beauty of one of the famous towns in the southern part of Cebu, to best understand its rich history and culture. Ocean Bay Resort, a beautiful known resort in Dalaguete will tell you the tales of History of the town.
An afternoon siesta on the resort lead me to asked the humble beginnings of the town from the locals working on the beach resort. As the story begins, there was once a troop of Spanish solders who came upon a village through the mountains of Obong Spring and saw a young lady washing her clothes by the flawing waters. They asked her what the name of the village was. The lady then replied “DALAKIT”, referring to the huge Balete tree behind her. The locals call it as “DALAKIT” or “ DAKIT”. And that’s how Dalaguete got its name. The locals use this tree as a landmark. They loved to host gatherings and conduct activities such as town festivals, contest and meetings. They even built a small market for trading their products to Asian traders from the ports of Cebu.
San Guillermo de Aquitania is the town’s patron saint. They dedicated a church made of solid rock stone with baroque earthquake architecture. The church was design with a watch- tower that serves as a lookout from Moros way back then. Dalaguetenons celebrates its annual town fiesta every 9th and 10th of February. One of the highlights of the celebration is the street dancing and showdown competition called “ Utanon Festival”. Utanon festival is also a form of thanksgiving for all the blessings and graces they have received from their patron saint and for giving them a place so rich in agriculture and music.
Dalaguete is home to Cebu highest summit, the Osmeña peak. Once you reach the Osmeña peak, you get a 360-degree view that includes the southern coastline in Cebu, even the province of Negros Oriental. The peak is approximately 1000 meters above sea level making it the highest peak in the island of Cebu. It was named in honor of the famous Osmeña clan. Unique from the other mountain ranges in the Philippines because of its jagged hills grouped together that overlooks and stretches as far as the Badian shorelines.
Visitors either local or foreign come to Dalaguete for two things, either hike up the highlands of Mantalongon or soak under the sun with its clear waters from Obong spring. Mantalongon is also known was the little Baguio of Cebu, where cool climate is very ideal for growing vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and more. Discover more about Dalaguete with Ocean Bay Resort! It’s a hidden gem, a favorite weekend destinations nowadays for city folks like you and me who wishes to escape from the city’s chaotic seen. Short but sweet. Ideal for a quick relaxation and rejuvenation of one’s mind.

Pit Senor! Christmas has gone by, celebrations and fireworks are still ongoing. This January, Cebuanos celebrate the Sinulog Festival. It is festival in honor of the Sto. Nino. The Sto. Nino is a Roman Catholic title of a statue of the child Jesus in Cebu City of Philippines. The image is venerated as miraculous by many Filipino Catholics. It is one of the oldest Christian relics in the Philippines, originally given in 1521 as a gift by explorer Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon and his wife when he landed on the island.
The statue measures approximately twelve inches tall, is made of a dark wood in baroque style and depicts the Child Jesus as a king dressed like Spanish royalty. The expressions, accessories and hand posture of Santo Nino de Cebu are similar to the Infant Jesus in Prague which is now located in Czech Republic. It is believed that both statues originated from the same European source, with the devotion to Santo Nino starting earlier of the two. The statue is clothed in rich fabrics, wears jewelry such as gilded neck chain and bears imperial regalia including a gold crown, globus cruciger, and various sceptres mostly donated by devotees.
The image received papal recognition on 28 April 1965, when Pope Paul VI issued a papal bull for the Canonical Coronation of the statue and raised the church that houses it to a basilica status to mark the 400th anniversary of the first Christian mission and rediscovery of the statue in Cebu. The image has historically attracted devotional worship in Philippines, attracting devotional worship, processions and pilgrimage, with numerous Filipino pilgrims touching or kissing the foot of the image's stand. There is an annual feast every January on the third Sunday which is marked by fiesta, called sinulog dancing in the streets, and prayers to Senor Santo Nino statue in Cebu City.
The Holy Child's image is liturgically celebrated during weekly Mass, novenas and Christian holidays. Along with the Black Nazarene idol of Jesus Christ, it is the most popular object of devotion in the Philippines specifically in Manila. The Sto. Nino image is replicated in many homes and business establishments, with different titles reinterpreted in various areas of the country. It is one of the most beloved and recognizable cultural icons in the Philippines, with the original permanently encased within a bulletproof glass case in a chapel at the Basílica Menor del Santo Niño.
This celebration is flocked by tourists, devotees, the locals and even the elderly. In current times, street parties often follow the whole day grand mardi gra and will always occupy the major roads of Cebu City. Not only that, delicacies from all around the provinces will be displayed for sale in malls, parade routes, and stalls will be popping up like mushrooms. At night, multiple malls and events will be launching firework displays. This week long celebration is the perfect time to explore the beautiful island of Cebu from north to south which are steaming with tourist spots such us historic sites, mountain trails and beaches. ROCK 'N ROLLTuesday, January 07, 2020
Over the years, water and the wind has been one of the most powerful forces that remained constant. A constant flow of water and a strong wind often creates some of the most wonderful or unique soil or even rock formations. Some of the rivers in this beautiful island of Cebu often took time to cut through a mountain. Some have created underwater caves or caves too vast for an individual to explore. But these natural marvels are not found in the City. If they are even found, it is not that exciting.
Caves, rock formations often provide you with that dose of adventure not to mention they are quite photogenic for your social media uploads. But where can we see or even marvel at these things? There is this town in the south of Cebu that is steaming with these unique formations.

Rock formations in Dalaguete can be found in mountains rather than underground. The Osmena Peak often has rock formations that are amazing. And some of these rock formations have urban legends dating back to the Spanish era. These urban legends often include stories of dwarfs, fairies and witches which is a really good story for the first visitors.
For those who are a fan of exploring underground chambers, a few can also be found in Dalaguete. Though it is not advisable to do the exploring at night since it is pitchblack, caves in Dalaguete are home to a lot of nocturnal creatures. All these exploring can get tiring and sometimes you just need to see a little sunset or sunrise while you are so occupied with caves and the rock formations. Cebu is such a beautiful place that most people choose to live here since the place is so pretty and the people are so friendly. Not only that, the place is perfect for a vacation. So much so that some investors go into investing on a beach resort because the Island of Cebu is situated on the perfect spot. But what does it take to manage a beach or let alone own one?
First you have to find the perfect location. In some cases coastal properties that are situated in far away places are the best. Why? Because your main purpose is to provide your customers that feeling of being on the road before ending their trip on a beautiful paradise. You do not need to have a shuttle to take your customers to and from the beach. But that can be a plus. Next you have to have your own restaurant within your beach. This not only provides additional revenues but, you get to create your own signature dishes or drinks that will make your resort stand out. A simple drink or a sophisticated meal can make your beach resort a place for people to go.
Aside from the food and drinks you serve, you also have to have a spacious place to hold company events or to accommodate lots of customers on peak seasons. This might be the easiest part of going into resort management since all you need is a space for your patrons to just enjoy the beach.
Second on your list of must have to have an awesome beach resort is the quality of sand and beach. People on vacation tend to enjoy fine white sand and a clean and serene beach with picturesque views. Though you can have a landscaper or an engineer help you with these aspects. A quiet room that boasts peace and relaxation is also a must have in beach resort. The rooms itself offers part of the resorts signature. So it is important not to take the room designs for granted.
Lastly, you have to know the kind of theme you want for your resort. Visiting other resorts before starting this investment is a must. This is where you get ideas and concepts. Its also a way for you to get an inspiration on what you want to have or not in your resort. Ocean Bay Beach Resort offers you a glimpse of everything. A good experience of the way to the resort, a peaceful yet simple room that gives you the sound of the waves crashing on the fine white sand beach. And of course an epic sunsets and sunrises everyday that is to die for.

Going on field or educational trips is always fun for students. These students are always looking for the next adventure that they can have. And that is fun for them. May you be a college or pre-college student, there's no better way to enjoy knowledge than to go on a field or educational trip. Most of the schools always look for the next trip outside of Cebu which could be costly. However, they do not know that most if not all educational tours can be done in Cebu. Certain places on this magnificent island. Take for example Dalaguete. This town is steaming with historic places and structures that you can learn a lot from.
Dalaguete has been home to famous local artists and key personnel that dates back to the Spanish era. Structures that has been in existence since the 18th century are still standing. Churches, museums and iconic landmarks are well maintained in this area.
Dalaguete has a handful of historic churches, a few ancestral houses that people can visit and numerous arts displayed in museums. Not only can this place cater to people learning something about history. But students who are not into history can also take part in the learning process. Dalaguete is home of rare local species of insects, birds, marine life and even certain species of trees which our friends from the biology department can get their hands on once they set foot on this town. Not only that, the local market gives you an abundant source of leafy and not so leafy vegetables that you can use or observe for whatever research you will be having since this is the vegetable basket capital of the Cebu.
But let us not forget our marine friends who are of course under the sea to explore marine life. At Dalaguete, you can conveniently stay at Ocean Bay Beach Resort where you can do your studies in the day, exploring and observing marine life in the area. The resort is also very student friendly since the prices are really affordable. Not only is the place affordable but the rooms are clean and limited to few number of rooms. Just a little below 30 rooms to give you the peace and silence that any student is looking for when on an educational trip. Not only that the resort is easily accessible to all areas of interest. So may you be a student into history or a biology student or even someone looking to explore or observe whatever your school is asking you to, this place is the best. On the schools side, they don't have to worry about spending too much for such tours since the place is easily accessible by bus. So whether you are part of the committee that organizes one or part of the student body that makes the final call, this resort is definitely a place you can stay for the entire duration of your trip. EXOTIC FOODWednesday, October 16, 2019
A special shout out to all foodies out there! Ever been the type to try a few new and exotic food? So exotic that some of them are not even served in restaurants. And some are only cooked by the few who knows how to prepare and cook theses kinds of foods. But hey Philippines is so big and Cebu though a small island, offers a lot of food like the lechon. Typical for first timers in this place. Now if you don't consider yourself a newbie in being a foodventurer, you should head out down south. Where you dont just enjoy a good ride with friends, you also get to enjoy this humble serene resort. You can't miss it. Ocean Bay Beach resort. Its quiet, clean, affordable and gives you just the right ambiance for peace and serenity. Or you can explore the exotic food in the area. Dalaguete as where this resort is conveniently located is not only home of vegetables and local delicacies. The place also offers a few exotic food for our friends who have a strong stomach. Here's a few you can try.
The great monitor lizard. Locally known as “haw”, these lizards can be kept as pets because of their calm temperament due to constant human handling. However, they are also eaten. Normally grilled in open fire or deep fried, only a few locals actually knows how to cook them properly. You might even mistake them as fried chicken. If you are lucky, you can find a few grilled lizards in the Dalaguete market. Or if you want to try getting a new pet lizard, then you can as well. You just need to capture one.
Next on our menu would be what is called “bakasi”, a salt water eel. Commonly served in areas where there is salt water. And they are sold in the market. There are two ways to cook bakasi. One is Paksiw style and the other one is Larang style. Both are cooked as soup dishes but different style and taste. They might be served in local restaurants but it takes skill to cook them since they are really chewy. Local fishermen also have their own recipe on these exotic foods.
Last on our menu would be the swaki or sea urchins. Fishermen actually get these to eat them. Swaki is a mysterious delicacy and are covered in long thin spikes where others have a hard shell that is made up of chalky plates. It is a tasty seafood, much yummier if eaten with condiments such as vinegar, calamansi or toyo. There's no need to cook this sea creature. All you have to do is crack its shell so that you can eat it and the sea urchin will actually move for over 30 minutes after it’s been opened. They have a beautiful yellow orange roe, slightly briney and which would instantly dissolve on your tongue. So you are actually eating it alive! And they are cheap. So the next time you want to taste something new, head to Ocean bay Beach Resort! CULTURE TO GOWednesday, October 02, 2019
The summer is almost over. Still some time left to head out to the beach and relax and get a tan. But for some, it’s time to get a little dose of history. Most museums are in the city and most of us really have to endure the traffic and pollution. But what if you are in Ocean Bay Beach Resort and you want that smell of history can you still get it when you are miles away from the city? The answer is a big yes! This resort is conveniently found in one of the historic places of Cebu.
Just to name a few of the places you can check even when you enjoying the summer sun and the sea breeze would be the “Museo sa Dalaguete”. Located at the 2nd floor of the towns century old building. This museum boasts valuable things of the ancient Dalaguetnon in the bygone era. Relics and artifacts that symbolize ancient life and culture of Dalaguete. This museum signifies tribute to the natives of Dalaguet especially their ingenuity, industry, lasting faith and resolute spirit. The museum itself was completed last 2009 just in time for the municipal’s Tri-Centennial Celebration. The relics and artifacts found inside shows the modern world how native and ancient Dalaguetnon people thrived against all odds. All the relics and artifacts in this museum are just waiting to be discovers, appreciated and learnt from.
Another historical building in the area is the Archbishop Manuel Salvador Museum. Located om the same area as “Museo sa Dalageute”, this structure is the ancestral house of the couples Filemon Osorio Salvador and Ursula del Mar Sandalo. The house itself was built in circa 1885 but underwent renovations in 1953 and 2001. It was used as residence by the couple since their marriage on April 19, 1909. It was then converted into a museum and a library in the year 2002. The Salvador-Sandalo clan include prominent public figures namely the late Mayor Filemon Osorio Salvador who was in office from 1922 to 1928 and the late Municipal Councilor and mother of the year awardee, the mayor’s wife, Ursula Sandalo-Salvador. Among the people to occupy this house are their children who also held public office namely Mayor Francisco Salvador and former coadjutor archbishop of Cebu Manuel Salvador, D.D to which this then house now museum and library was named after.
These are just two of the other historic places you can find in Dalaguete. The better news is, it is just within the municipality of Dalaguete. So that means no more rush hour traffic and polluted air. The best news is of course you can catch a glimpse of Dalaguete’s history while you are conveniently staying in Ocean Bay Beach Resort. So the next time you are out in the sun and enjoying the seabreeze, don’t forget to revisit the past of the place you are in. I don’t know if you’re up for some history lessons while you’re in the beach, I know I am. HIGH, HIGH IN THE SKYTuesday, September 17, 2019
The heat is almost over as summer is on its way to its end. The city is now experiencing a few rain showers and cloudy mornings to afternoons. But that doesn't mean its time to stop going to beach. Enjoying the sun on a beach is one of the few things people will do. But at Ocean Bay Beach Resort, the resort itself is comfortably placed in a lush greenery that also enjoys the rain. The forest that this area boasts is home to a lot of unique and beautiful creatures.
One specifically unique in the area is the Cebu Flowerpecker which has at least 51 bird species found only forest patches of Dalaguete and the Nug-as Forest in Alcoy which is just 45mins trip from the resort. These birds live in the tall native trees, their natural habitat. The bird itself lives in tall canopy trees and feeds on mistletoe flower making them important in seed dispersal.
For bird watchers, they would know what these birds would look like but for those starters, the bird is only 11-12cm and is short and stocky and has a stout bill. The male has a conspicuous pattern, with blackish head, bright scarlet-red mantle and back, yellow-green rump, blackish-blue wings and tail, and greyish-white underparts with paler ventral stripe. With all those colors, I would suggest bringing a picture of one if you want just to compare and confirm what you saw.
For those who can identify a bird with its unique song, it would compromise a series of thin, high-pitched, sweet notes and calls with a thin seep interspersed with harder ticking notes.
Another bird that's endemic in the area is the Cebu Hawk Owl. It was believed to be extinct because of massive deforestation in Cebu. But in 1998, it was rediscovered by bird ecologists. This bird has seven full species. The Cebu Flowerpecker helps in spreading of seeds of mistletoe flowers. But these hawk owls are actually predators and feed on smaller animals such as rats, insects and snakes. It also good to note that these species of owl does not have any ears. And the male and female looks pretty much the same. They doesn't have a specific preference of tree to nest on but one this is for sure, it does not like exotic trees like mahogany. They however still nest on local canopy trees.
One more bird on the list that's local in Dalaguete is the Black Shama, this bird can also be found in nearby forests in Alcoy and Argao. However, they have been seen in Dalaguete rainforests. There have been reports that they have also been sighted in Bohol but not as many in Dalaguete. The Black Shama's name describes it. It looks like a small crow only 20cm and has a long tail. The bird itself is entirely black and plumage with dark bluish gloss, duller on the wings and male tend to be brighter than the female.
Ocean Bay Beach Resort does not only offer a beach lifestyle but also brings you closer to nature and lets you enjoy the sounds of the forest. THRILL AND CHILLSunday, September 08, 2019
A lot of people would opt to go to the malls to escape the scorching sun. While some still would prefer hitting the beach. Though a good number of extreme adventurers out there are trying out the next ultimate adrenaline rush. Or for some to get in touch with nature learning about its different diversities. And some still prefer a good evening campfire.
Good thing Ocean Bay Beach Resorts exists! Everything that I mentioned above can be done either in this resort or near the resort. This resort is actually situated in Dalaguete. A small municipality with a population of appr. 63,000 as of year 2010. That’s a good thing since most of its wonders or natural beauty haven’t been touched by capitalists yet. So what do we have installed for you this summer? A good dip in Ocean Bay Beach Resort’s beach, good food, quiet place, and good company of bats and flying foxes. That’s right! Bats and flying foxes. Though they are not in the resort but you can actually see them in Dalaguete. Let me tell you where and what you can do especially for the adrenaline junkies.
The journey to adrenaline nirvana starts by trekking the hardest obstacle adventure in the province. There is a hidden valley where you can find biodiversity and endemic flora and fauna in the area. You start off at the Cawayan Sumbria Bridge and experience a river trek that could put you on the list of certified adventurer. Get that dose of black boulders, untouched waterfalls and treacherous river. This is not quiet type of river since its banks are lined with sharp rocks and in some places, thorny plants. And if both of those are not there, watch out for slippery rocks. While in this area you actually get a glimpse of the elusive monkeys and fruit bat. Or if you’re lucky, you can get the chance to see the endangered Cebu Black Shama. This bird is endemic to the island of Cebu. Its natural habitats are subtropical and tropical. It is often found down south especially in cool wet forests.
I mentioned bats earlier. You can actually see these bats in Lagnason Creek, its natural habitat. And where there are bats, there are foxes as well. Not just ordinary foxes but flying foxes. You can see up to 4 different species in this creek. This is the only place in Cebu where you can spot these furry flying creatures. Two of the four species are the world’s largest flying foxes. Locally known as “Kabog” and this is the only place where you can spot this species.
So there you are folks adventure and nature trekking to the next level. Enjoying these at the same time hitting the beach. Ocean Bay Beach Resort the only place to stay to enjoy summer. YUMMYThursday, August 22, 2019
Its time once again to check out Ocean Bay Beach Resort. This isn't just a private cozy beach in Dalaguete. Aside from the tourist attractions in the area, this resort is situated in the heart of Dalaguete. What that means is you can easily enjoy the scenery of the place. But that's not all. Dalaguete is a small town which means less traffic, less pollution and friendlier people and of course untouched culture. The best thing about culture is food. You get to taste a place's culture through its food. And what a better place to enjoy food? You enjoy it while on vacation. Here's a few of Dalaguete's very own.
Banana Meat! In some countries, the banana is mixed with ice cream to make a sundae or a banana split. Or in some, they are used as sandwiches. Well in Dalaguete, we fry 'em. And these aren't normal fried banana you have heard of in the Philippines. The banana is immaculately stuffed with prime ground meat. Though at first glance, it looks like your ordinary fried banana but at first bite, it's a culinary wonder! Soft, sweet and juicy on the outside, but meaty and spicy on the inside. This has been a local favorite that the food itself has become a mainstay in fiestas and buffets.
Next, we have the Bibingka. Though there are other towns that offer this food, Dalaguete's Bibingka is unique in a lot of ways. These are made of ground glutinous rice baked to perfection in traditional ovens called “hudnohan”. They are then heated by burning coals with green banana leaves used as drapes to enhance its flavor and texture. And what more is, the thick sweet sauce or locally known as “latik” which is made of pure coconut milk and brown sugar is poured generously on the steaming hot freshly baked bibingkas.
Next on the must taste list is the local Podrida. It isn't pudding as it's first syllable sounds like. It is a thick but soft pastry of luscious fruity fillings of jackfruit or locally known as “nangka” or “lanka”. It has an appearance of a volcano. And true enough, its crater holds the tasty secret. It won't spill what it is of course. You just have to try it yourselves.
And don't forget the ancient Tostado. It is a sweet golden brown cookie shaped like a moon, star and in some cases a flower. These cookies dates back to the Spanish era where it was a favorite snack for the Spaniards. Handed down from generation to generation by local indigenous bakers. This cookie is a must try.
These are just a few of what the town has to offer. The good part is, Ocean Bay Beach Resort is situated right in the heart of it. The better part is, local delicacies are not just cheap but they can stay good for 5 to 6 days. And the best part? You are in Ocean Bay not just enjoying the sea or the sunsets but you are actually merging with the culture through the local delicacies. ESCAPE THE CITYThursday, November 29, 2018

Cooking them to your own liking is of course allowed. For the adventurers out there they can camp by the beach or in the famous Osmena Peak. Or just go trekking for the entire day.
They always say that it's not the destination that matters but the trip. Some however always focus on the destination rather than the trip. But why not enjoy both? Have good fun ride to the Ocean Bay Beach Resort that you can definitely enjoy with your barkada or your family and at the same time enjoy the place that can change your road trip to a week long vacation.
